How long is a private jet flight from London to Gibraltar?

About two hours forty minutes in a midsize jet. The distance is 1,700 to 1,800 km depending on the London airport, so Farnborough, Biggin Hill and Luton are within about ten minutes of each other in the air.

Which London airport should I fly from?

The one nearest to where you start, unless the aircraft is based elsewhere. Biggin Hill suits the City, Canary Wharf and south-east London, Farnborough suits west London and Surrey, and Luton suits north London and Hertfordshire. A jet that has to fly empty across London to collect you adds to the price, so we quote from whichever airport gives the better total and tell you why.

Which private jets can land at Gibraltar?

The runway is about 1,777 m long, and displaced thresholds at both ends leave less than that for landing. Light, midsize and super-midsize jets are comfortable. The runway check below counts the jets that fit on length alone at maximum take-off weight. A flight from London needs far less fuel than that, so for heavy and long-range jets the operator’s performance calculation for the actual load and the day’s wind decides. We make that check before we quote, not after.

Do cars still drive across the runway?

No. Winston Churchill Avenue, the road to the Spanish border, used to cross the runway and close for every flight. Since 31 March 2023 cars have used the Kingsway tunnel instead. People on foot and on bicycles still cross, and the crossing closes to them whenever an aircraft is landing or taking off. None of this affects your flight: private passengers use the business aviation wing of the terminal, about 200 metres from the border.

What border checks are there at Gibraltar Airport?

The UK–EU agreement on Gibraltar has been provisionally applied since 15 July 2026. Anyone arriving from outside the Schengen area, the UK included, now clears Gibraltar immigration and then a Schengen entry check by Spanish officers at the airport. For UK passport holders that includes registration in the EU Entry/Exit System. In return, routine checks at the land border have ended, so you drive straight on into Spain. The arrangements are new, and we confirm the current procedure for private passengers with the handler before you fly.

What happens if the weather closes Gibraltar?

The Rock makes its own weather. In an easterly Levanter a cloud forms over it and the approach turns turbulent, and with no instrument landing system, low cloud or a strong crosswind can stop arrivals. Málaga, about 130 km and an hour and a half away by road, is the usual alternate, and operators carry the fuel to reach it. If a flight diverts, any car we have arranged is sent to Málaga instead.

When is the airport open, and can the aircraft wait there?

Gibraltar is not open around the clock. It works to published hours, from morning until late evening, and does not extend them, so a late departure from London is planned back from the closing time. Every private flight needs prior permission, which the operator arranges through Gibair, the handler. Whether the aircraft can stay on the ground for several days depends on the space available, which we confirm before we confirm the trip; otherwise it flies home or to Málaga and comes back for you.

Is Gibraltar the right airport for Sotogrande and Marbella?

For Sotogrande, yes. Gibraltar is the nearest jet airport, about 25 km and 25 minutes by road, which makes it the arrival for Valderrama, the Santa María Polo Club and the marina, and the drive no longer depends on the queue at the border. Marbella and Puerto Banús are about an hour from Gibraltar but about 45 minutes from Málaga, so for them London to Málaga is usually the better route.
