Private Jet to Málaga

Málaga is the door to the Costa del Sol and the only airport most Marbella trips need: fifteen minutes to the city, forty-five to Puerto Banús, with Gibraltar and Granada as the alternates for Sotogrande and the Sierra Nevada. From London or Frankfurt it is a flight of two and a half hours.

Airports

Which airport for Málaga.

Málaga takes every jet in the reference fleet and is the right answer for nine trips in ten; Gibraltar saves an hour on the road to Sotogrande but limits the aircraft, and Granada only makes sense for the city or the ski area.

AirportTo the centreRunwayJets that fit
Málaga AGP8 km, 15 min to the city; Marbella 45 min, Puerto Banús 50 min, Sotogrande 1 h 153,200 m 70 of 70 VIP airliner

Granada GRX15 min to Granada, 45 min to the Sierra Nevada ski area, 1 h 30 to Málaga2,900 m 70 of 70 VIP airliner
  • Málaga (AGP): The Costa del Sol's airport, with a separate general aviation terminal and 24-hour operation. Busy with scheduled traffic in July and August, when parking for a multi-day stay should be reserved with the flight.

  • Gibraltar (GIB): The arrival for Sotogrande, Valderrama and the western coast, and a cheaper landing than Málaga. The runway is short at about 1,777 m, there is no instrument landing system, and low cloud or strong winds can send a flight to Málaga instead. There is no instrument landing system here, and high ground rises right beside the runway. Low cloud, poor visibility or strong turbulence can close the airport to arrivals, so operators plan a diversion airport and carry the fuel for it on every flight.

  • Granada (GRX): For the Alhambra and the ski season from December to April. A quiet regional airport with daytime opening hours, so check the slot before an evening arrival.

Rule of thumb: published take-off distance at maximum weight, sea level, a standard day and a dry runway. Altitude, weather and airport rules can still rule out an aircraft the runway allows. Check any airport in the runway checker

When to Go

Málaga through the year.

Easter. Semana Santa, which falls on 28 March in 2027, brings the processions to Málaga and the first full week of the season to Marbella; book a week ahead.

May to June. The best weeks on the coast: warm, not yet crowded, and the golf courses at their greenest. Slots at Málaga are easy.

July and August. Peak season. Marbella's Starlite festival, the Feria de Málaga in mid-August and the Sotogrande polo fill the coast; parking at Málaga for a week needs reserving with the flight.

September and October. Sea still warm, roads quieter, the second golf season under way. For many of our clients October is the best month on this coast.

Christmas and New Year. Two weeks of winter sun with the coast's hotels full and the skiers arriving via Granada for the Sierra Nevada.

November to February. Mild, mostly dry, and the quietest season at the airport; the golf courses, the Alhambra and the ski area are the reasons to come.

In Brief

Málaga, in brief.

Where to stay

Marbella’s Golden Mile is where most arrivals head: the Marbella Club and Puente Romano on the beach, with Puerto Banús ten minutes further west. Sotogrande, an hour and a quarter from Málaga or twenty-five minutes from Gibraltar, is the quieter alternative, built around Valderrama, the polo fields and the marina. Málaga itself has become worth a night, with the Gran Hotel Miramar on the seafront and the old town’s restaurants a walk away, and the Alhambra is an hour and a half inland for anyone combining the coast with Granada.

What to do

Golf is the first answer on this coast, with more than fifty courses between Málaga and Sotogrande and two seasons, spring and autumn, when the greens are at their best. Summer belongs to the beach clubs, the Starlite concerts in Marbella and the Sotogrande polo in August. Málaga’s Picasso Museum and the Centre Pompidou fill a rainy morning, the white villages of Ronda and Mijas a dry one, and the Sierra Nevada offers skiing from December to April, forty-five minutes above Granada.

Getting around

A car meets the aircraft at all three airports, and the coast road, the AP-7, does the rest: Marbella in forty-five minutes from Málaga, Sotogrande in an hour and a quarter, or twenty-five minutes from Gibraltar once across the border. Helicopter transfers to Marbella’s heliport and to Sotogrande take fifteen minutes from Málaga and are easy to arrange in summer. In August, allow extra time on the road into Puerto Banús in the evening.

Good to know

Spain is on central European time, so there is no jet lag from Germany, Switzerland or France, and one hour’s difference from London. The Costa del Sol counts more than three hundred days of sun a year, but the levante wind from the east can close Gibraltar for a day; Málaga is the reliable choice when the date cannot move. Cards are accepted everywhere, and lunch runs late, from two o’clock.

Questions

Before you fly to Málaga.

How long is a private jet flight to Málaga from Europe?

About 2 h 35 from London or Munich, 2 h 45 from Frankfurt, 2 h 15 from Paris and 2 h 20 from Zurich, all non-stop in a light or midsize jet. From Dubai it is just over seven hours in a heavy jet, non-stop.

Which airport should I use for Marbella?

Málaga. It is 45 minutes from Marbella and 50 from Puerto Banús, takes any aircraft and is open around the clock. Gibraltar is only worth it for Sotogrande and the far western coast, where it saves close to an hour, and then only when the weather and the aircraft type suit its short runway.

How much does a private jet to Málaga cost?

From about €10,500 one way from Geneva or €11,500 from Zurich in a light jet, about €16,000 from London in a midsize jet, and from about €62,000 from Dubai in a heavy jet. The whole aircraft is priced, so six passengers pay the same as two.

How far in advance should I book?

A day or two is enough for most of the year, and same-day works outside the summer. For July, August, Easter and the Christmas fortnight, book a week ahead and tell us how long the aircraft should stay, because parking at Málaga is the thing that runs out.

Can I fly on to Ibiza, Marrakech or Lisbon on the same aircraft?

Yes. Ibiza is about an hour away, Marrakech 1 h 20 and Lisbon 1 h 10, so a Costa del Sol stay often becomes the first leg of a longer itinerary. The aircraft and crew can wait, or we position a second aircraft for the onward legs.

Is Gibraltar a difficult airport?

Only in bad weather. The runway is about 1,777 m, there is no instrument landing system, and the Rock sits beside the approach, so low cloud or a strong easterly wind means a diversion to Málaga. On a clear day it is the quickest arrival for Sotogrande, 25 minutes door to door.

What about golf bags and skis?

A midsize jet carries golf bags for everyone on board; for a large party with skis for the Sierra Nevada we choose an aircraft with a tall baggage hold or send the equipment ahead. Tell us what is coming and we match the aircraft.
