The thing that catches people out about Australia is the scale. Perth to Sydney is over four hours in a fast jet — further than London to Moscow — and it is a domestic flight. Distance, not destination, is what sets the aircraft here, and a trip that looks like a short hop on a map routinely needs a cabin class larger than the same journey would in Europe.

Where business aviation actually goes

The major cities all have a general-aviation answer alongside the main airport. Sydney handles business traffic at Kingsford Smith and at Bankstown; Melbourne at Essendon Fields, which is far closer to the centre than Tullamarine; Brisbane at Archerfield as well as the main field. The Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Hamilton Island cover the Queensland coast and the reef. Hobart opens Tasmania, Cairns the tropical north, and Darwin and Broome the remote north-west, where the distances become the whole planning problem.

New Zealand

Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch are straightforward. Queenstown is the one worth planning properly: it sits in a valley ringed by mountains, the approaches are terrain-driven and require specific crew qualification, and weather closes it more often than visitors expect. It is a wonderful place to arrive and a poor place to leave to chance — we will always give you an alternate.

Aircraft and availability

There are far fewer heavy and ultra-long-range aircraft based in the region than in Europe or North America. For a long domestic sector that is usually fine; for an intercontinental departure it can mean the aircraft positions in from Asia or the Middle East, and that positioning is a real cost that belongs in the conversation early rather than as a surprise in the quote.

Cabotage matters here too: a foreign-registered aircraft generally may not carry passengers between two Australian points, which decides who can quote a purely domestic leg.

Season

The hemisphere is reversed, so the Australian summer runs from December to February and the peak demand with it — the Gold Coast, the reef and the Tasmanian season all compete for the same aircraft at once. The New Zealand ski season runs July to September and pushes Queenstown hard. In both cases the answer is the same: ask early, and the whole thing becomes straightforward.
